Running Injuries
Injured runners and athletes in Edison and Metuchen often think of pain as normal, but this isn't always the case. When you're experiencing a significant amount of pain in your legs, ankle or feet, it's best to see a podiatrist for a thorough evaluation. You'll need the help of a professional to diagnose your particular condition and recommend the best possible treatment to get you back on track. Our experienced Edison podiatrist is here to help.
Most runners bear with the pain until it becomes serious, i.e., a foot or ankle fracture, or a stress fracture that could have been easily avoided. However, at Edison Foot Care LLC will always recommend the adage "prevention is better than the cure". If you're a runner it's considered best practice to visit your podiatrist every year for a comprehensive evaluation.
In the evaluation, we can determine each runner's specific needs and concerns via a number of tests, including measuring how they walk, the wear pattern and their running shoes. From there, we can determine if your footwear is appropriate or if there's a need to make a custom orthotic device.
FOOT CARE FOR RUNNERS
When was the last time you got new shoes? Studies have shown that shoes must be replaced for every 200 to 400 miles you've walked or run with them. We recommend getting at least 2 pairs of running shoes and alternating between them each time you head out the door. Moreover, we suggest that you should only use running shoes for running and not for everyday use.
You'll also need to pay attention to your socks and laces. Get laces that cost $2 to $3 and have bumps in them so they don't slide out of the holes. Thorlo socks may be more expensive but they are worth the investment, especially when it comes to added cushion and ability to wick sweat off of the feet.
Each runner's needs are different. Edison Foot Care LLC can help find the best solution for you. Contact us by phone or email with any questions. We'll be happy to help.
